Vector Field Visualization

Type a field F̄(x, y) and move the input point around the plane to get the output vector at each point. The field is also drawn as arrows and as animated airflow.

About this tool

The field F‾(x,y)\overline{F}(x, y) is typed as its two components or picked from the presets, such as a rotation or a saddle. Show numbers works out the substitution at the input point under Field at the input point:

F‾(x0,y0)=(⋯⋯).\overline{F}(x_0, y_0) = \begin{pmatrix} \cdots \\ \cdots \end{pmatrix}.

Place puts an arrow for the output vector at the input point. With Arrows off, the plot can be built by hand from placed arrows and then compared with the full field. Show R gives the matching makeFun() and plotVectorField() code.

Keys: press an arrow key to move the input point one step of 0.25. With Snap on, the step is 1. Hold Shift with an arrow key to move it five steps. Press Enter to place an arrow. Press Backspace to remove the last placed arrow.
